Chiefs of Polish and Czech
diplomacy discuss Ukraine and joint actions in Europe
"Poland and the Czech Republic are partners who
can effectively act together in the European Union," underscored Polish
and Czech Foreign Ministers, Radosław Sikorski and Lubomir Zaoralek, who met in
Warsaw on Wednesday. It is the first visit to Poland by the chief of Czech
diplomacy since assuming his post in January this year.
During the meeting, the
ministers declared continued support and aid for Ukraine. "Preserving
Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity is key. We, the Visegrad
Group, are prepared to share our transformation experience with the new
government," said Minister Sikorski referring to the joint declaration
adopted by the chiefs of diplomacy of the V4 in Budapest on Monday. He added
that the greatest challenge now is convincing the Ukrainian people to make the
indispensable sacrifices in the process of reforming the country.
"Talks with Minister Sikorski have convinced me that between the Republic of Poland and the Czech Republic there are no serious issues that we would not be able to resolve. For ten years we have been in the EU. Our countries share the same approach to many issues. We want Central Europe to play a still greater role in the EU," said Minister Zaoralek in Warsaw. Poland's top diplomat stressed that he welcomed the Czech government's decision to accede to the fiscal compact.
"We are intensifying work on creating a regional gas market, including a gas interconnector between our countries," noted Minister Sikorski. The chiefs of diplomacy agreed that creating a regional gas market will help to improve energy security in the region and ensure independence of supplies of this raw material from Russia. Minister Sikorski also mentioned good cooperation of the defence industries. He said he hoped that negotiations to purchase radars by the Czech Republic will be finalised soon.
