Polish and French ministers for European affairs on EU’s energy security

The EU’s energy security in the context of the situation in Ukraine and the Union’s institutional future after the elections to the European Parliament were the main subjects of a meeting between Piotr Serafin, the MFA Secretary of State, and Harlem Désir, France’s European Affairs Minister.
The French minister chose Warsaw for one of his first visits abroad since taking office. The ministers agreed it is important that the EU’s response to the Ukrainian crisis should be consistent and uniform. “We should be solidary in our efforts which on the one hand will support Ukraine’s transformation while on the other will have a disciplinary effect on Russia. The crisis should be also used as an opportunity for an internal reflection on the EU’s functioning and the ways in which it could be reformed. Our response is the energy union project,” stressed Deputy Minister Serafin.

The deputy chief of Polish diplomacy added that one of our proposals contributing to the establishment of an Energy Union involves increasing the EU’s bargaining power in negotiations with external gas suppliers and the concept of joint purchasing on the energy market. “I’m happy with France’s support for this issue. Together we can form a driving force in rallying support for this ambitious proposal of the European Commission among other member states, both as regards the transparency of negotiations with external energy suppliers, and pooling the demand for gas supplies,” said Deputy Minister Serafin.
