Third edition of Polish-French strategic dialogue

Security and defence policy was the subject of the third edition of the Polish-French strategic dialogue. The Polish delegation to Chateâu de la Tour near Paris on May 19th and 20th was headed by the two undersecretaries of state: the MFA’s Bogusław Winid and the MOD’s Robert Kupiecki.
The meeting’s French hosts were Jacques Audibert, Political Director at the Foreign Ministry, and Philippe Errera, Director of Strategic Affairs at the Ministry of Defence. The officials talked about challenges to security policy and the EU’s and NATO’s priorities in connection with the developments in Ukraine. The discussion also covered the consequences of the Ukrainian crisis for the security in Europe and in its strategic neighbourhood. “The Polish-French dialogue on the security and defence policy is extremely important for the two sides,” said Deputy Minister Winid. “France is Poland’s key partner, both in foreign policy and military affairs. We are happy with the consensus of our opinions on the most vital issues,” he added.

In the run-up to September’s NATO summit, the talks also addressed the impact of the Ukrainian crisis on NATO’s priorities and on the form of relations with Russia. Attention was also devoted to implementing the European Council conclusion of December 2013 on the EU’s security and defence policy, and to security in the Sahel region. Deputy Minister Winid stressed the necessity of taking common actions for retaining high defence spending in Europe.

Consultations in this format were first held in Chantilly in April 2013, and continued in October 2013 in Niepołomice near Kraków. The venue of the meeting has a symbolic dimension, for it was in the commune of Chantilly that the famous First Regiment of Light Cavalry of Napoleon's Imperial Guard was garrisoned.
