EU’s Southern Neighbourhood discussed in Warsaw
The seminar titled “Coming to Terms with the Aftermath of
the Arab Spring and the Stalemate in the MEPP: Role of the West in the
MENA region” was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in
collaboration with the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). The
event was also attended by renowned Middle East experts from the ECFR’s
London office.
In his opening address, Deputy Minister Artur Nowak-Far emphasised Poland’s constructive contribution to shaping the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). He pointed out that Poland is also focusing its attention on the EU’s Southern Neighbourhood.
The deputy chief of the MFA remarked that countries covered by the Eastern Partnership will obviously remain in the centre of Poland’s attention, for political, geographical, historical and cultural reasons. “It’s not true, though, that we’re indifferent to the aspirations of citizens from countries in North Africa and the Middle East which were articulated during the Arab Spring. On the contrary—Poland identifies with those aspirations and sympathises with them, also for reasons of our history,” said Deputy Minister Nowak-Far.
The seminar discussed, among other things, the effectiveness of the EU’s policy in the Middle East and North Africa, including countries that experienced the Arab Spring, and the prospects of the Middle East Peace Process.
