Poland’s foreign minister talked about situation in Crimea with President of Estoni
The situation in Ukraine and the region’s military and energy security were among the topics discussed by Poland’s top diplomat Radosław Sikorski and Estonia’s President Toomas Hendrik Ilves on Tuesday in Warsaw. The interlocutors condemned the “illegal occupation of Crimea.”
“The chief of Poland’s diplomacy and the Estonian president stressed that the two countries share a common position on the occupation of Crimea and the illegal referendum,” says the MFA press release sent to PAP on Tuesday evening.
Sikorski stressed that Poland and Estonia are partners with similar views on many issues. Ilves drew attention to the strong ties of friendship between the two countries and to the mutual understanding in questions related to problems of the entire region, such as the conflict in Ukraine.
According to the MFA, other topics discussed at the meeting included military and energy security of the region and the Baltic Air Policing mission.
The MFA press release reports that Sikorski thanked President Ilves for preparing the meeting of ministers of Visegrad, Nordic and Baltic States, held on 6-7 March in the Estonian city of Narva.
The Estonian president’s official visit to Poland is scheduled through 20 March. On Tuesday, he met with Vice President of the United States Joe Biden and with President Bronisław Komorowski. On Wednesday, Estonia’s president will meet will Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
On Tuesday, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin signed a treaty to incorporate Crimea and Sevastopol into the Russian Federation. In his address, he stressed that in Ukraine western partners had crossed the red line and “behaved brutally, irresponsibly and unprofessionally.” In response, the Ukrainian MFA stated that it will not recognise Crimea’s incorporation into Russia. Ukraine’s Prime Minister Anrsenyi Yatsenyuk said that the conflict with Russia is shifting from
a political to a military stage. (PAP)
