Minister Sikorski for La Repubblica about the situation in Ukraine on the eve of presidential elections
Interviewed by editor Jan Gebert, a correspondent of the Italian journal, the chief of Poland’s diplomacy describes the situation in Ukraine on the eve of the planned presidential elections. “We have information that several dozen election committees out of the 3000 existing in Ukraine are threatened. If even a certain number of committees will not be able to operate property, it should not be turned into a reason to undermine the election results,” notes Minister Sikorski.
The minister also analyses Russia’s interests in its operations in Crimea and eastern Ukraine. A democratic Ukraine, objectively speaking, is a threat to the style of exercising power in Russia. On the other hand, President Putin has been trying to rebuild influence in former Russian colonies, says the minister. He also notes that European countries have learned from history that such thinking can lead to a tragic end. Minister Sikorski adds that the argument of “protecting” Russian-speaking citizens is a dangerous doctrine: It implies that a similar instability as in Ukraine may develop in any other country bordering on Russia.
Replying to a question about talks aimed at engaging European countries in closer cooperation to purchase gas, the minister stressed, “Every country believes that by acting alone it can strike a better deal with Russia. The result is, unfortunately, not the best, because in Europe we are paying the highest prices for Russian gas. For this reason, Prime Minister Tusk suggested an energy union to make our collective and separate economies competitive.
The minister also spoke to the Italian journal about elections to the European parliament. “We are facing huge challenges. I hope that the new leadership of the European Union will restore Europeans’ confidence in Europe,” the minister points out.
