“Western determination to
support Ukraine has never been so strong,” Minister Radosław Sikorski told
French daily L’Opinion on 6 March 2014
“Signing the association agreement and establishing a
deep and comprehensive free trade area between the EU and Ukraine is possible,”
said Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski in an interview for the French daily L’Opinion.
“In recent months, Ukrainians have clearly shown that they want their country
to pursue the path of European integration and become a state of law. The
political declaration made at the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels that
signing the agreement does not put an end to Ukraine’s European aspirations is
groundbreaking,” stressed the chief of Poland’s diplomacy.
“The EU has found that Russia’s actions in Crimea were
an act of aggression that must entail consequences in international law. […]
Russia should, first of all, fulfil its commitments under international agreements
that it signed,” said Radosław Sikorski. “As long as force has not been used,
there is still time to withdraw and avoid a major conflict that will have
irreversible consequences for Russia and for Europe. On this we are insisting,”
stressed Sikorski.
In the interview, the chief of Poland’s diplomacy
admitted that the international community has “a range of instruments that can
be used to return the situation to normal.” “For the time being, these mainly
include putting intense diplomatic pressure on Russia. It is important that
today the European Union speaks in unison ― only when it does so can we speak
about a common external policy,” the minister underscored.
“We are demanding Russian forces to leave Crimea,” the
minister said in the interview. “In the present situation, any steps taken
should be coordinated with those of the EU’s key partners, in particular the
United States,” added Sikorski. The minister also noted that the Weimar
Triangle’s common action to avoid destabilisation in the region is very
important to Poland. The recent declarations by German political leaders that
Germany plans to move towards a more active foreign policy have been confirmed
in the case of Ukraine which is so important to us,” noted the chief of
Poland’s diplomacy. According to Radosław Sikorski, in talks with Vladimir
Putin Chancellor Angela Merkel should refer to the fact that Germany is one of
Russia’s most important economic and political partners. “Minister Steinmeier
has already played a major role in stabilising the situation in Ukraine as one
of the witnesses of signing the agreement between President Yanukovych and
leaders of the opposition. This agreement helped ease the situation in Kyiv,”
stressed the minister.
