Poland’s top diplomat in Kyiv and Odessa
On Wednesday, Minister Radosław Sikorski visited
Ukraine. His visit was a gesture of support for the new authorities and an
opportunity to look at the current security situation. Poland offers Ukraine
assistance in carrying out reforms, in particular the financial system,
government decentralisation and anti-corruption system reforms.
“I have visited Ukraine many times, but this is my
first visit to Ukraine associated with the EU,” stressed Minister Sikorski
referring to the signing of the political part of the EU-Ukraine Association
Agreement last week. “You have paid a very high price for this. The whole world
knows about the heroes of Maidan. The agreement represents an enormous
modernisation opportunity for Ukraine. I hope that the new government will not
waste this opportunity.”
In Kyiv, Radosław Sikorski met with Prime Minister
Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Foreign Minister Andrii Deshchytsia. He offered Poland’s
support in government decentralisation, public spending reform and fighting
against corruption. The minister welcomed the changes taking place in Ukraine,
specifically the adoption of the anti-corruption law, and the decision to
implement biometric passports in Ukraine. “We know that you are going through
tough times, but Poland is keeping its fingers crossed for you,” added Poland’s
foreign minister. Minister Sikorski also met with the chief of the IMF mission,
where a macroeconomic assistance package is being prepared for Ukraine.
In the afternoon, Minister Sikorski visited Odessa,
where he gave a lecture on European integration at the local university. In his
address, he recalled the key elements of Poland’s political and economic
transformation and expressed hope that Ukraine will repeat this success.
“Odessa is a European city, and Ukraine is a European country. You have a
European future ahead of you. You are a potentially rich country,” said
Minister Sikorski who also met with the local governor and with representatives
of the EUBAM mission that monitors the Ukraine-Moldova border. Moreover, the
chief of Poland’s diplomacy visited the Consulate General of the Republic of
Poland in Odessa, which took over the duties of the consulate in Sevastopol.
