Poland-Romania talks on EU's
future
Climate and energy policy in the run up to the
European Council meeting in March, institutional changes in the EU after
elections to the European Parliament and regional political cooperation were
the key issues discussed by Secretary of State Piotr Serafin and Romanian MFA's
Secretary of State George Ciamba.
On March 3, the deputy ministers met in Warsaw to
discuss their positions on the EU climate and energy policy’s objectives and
options, which will be at the top of the agenda of the European Council meeting
in March.
"We expect the upcoming Council to provide a
forum for a broad discussion about the EU climate and energy policy options
until 2030 with a view to global climate negotiations. The Council's
conclusions should include, first of all, a call for a debate in the relevant
Council formats in the coming months. We still have much time until the first
quarter of 2015 before we present binding decisions," said Deputy Minister
Serafin. Deputy Minister Ciamba agreed that binding decisions should be
preceded by a broad debate that should account for industrial competitiveness
issues. He emphasised the need to maintain the right balance between the
objectives of reducing greenhouse emissions, improving the European industry's
competitiveness and guaranteeing energy security for Europe.
Speaking about the situation in Ukraine—a common
neighbour of Poland and Romania—the ministers expressed their concern over the
developments in Crimea, stressing the need to stabilise the situation as soon
as possible.
