EU Foreign Affairs Council
condemns illegal referendum in Crimea
EU foreign ministers who met in Brussels on Monday
discussed the situation in Ukraine, specifically in Crimea and in its eastern
and southern areas.
The FAC Conclusions strongly condemned Russian
aggression in Ukraine and declared the referendum that took place in Crimea on
Sunday illegal. At the same time in response to the lack of de-escalation of
the situation and the operations of Crimean separatists, the Council imposed
sanctions against twenty-one inhabitants of Crimea and citizens of the Russian
Federation responsible for the developments in the Peninsula involving visa
bans and asset freezes. The EU ministers made it clear that in the absence of
de-escalation, the European Council of Heads of State and Government that meets
at the end of the week may adopt further measures.
During lunch, ministers listened to a presentation by
Commissioner for Energy Guenter Oettinger on the European energy market and
ways to diversify energy supply.
The Polish delegation was headed by Minister Radosław
Sikorski who prior to the FAC meeting took part in a meeting of the Group of
Friends of Ukraine with acting Foreign Minister Andriy Deshchytsia.
