Preparations for the European Council’s June meeting, especially the energy-related issues, were the main topics of the General Affairs Council. Polish delegation to Brussels on May 13 was headed by Undersecretary of State Piotr Serafin.
One the major points on the agenda of the European Council’s June meeting will involve discussing the European Commission’s proposals to improve the EU’s energy security. Poland is supporting the idea of establishing an Energy Union, as an important contribution to the Commission’s preparatory work. “The EU won’t be the same after the Ukrainian crisis anymore. We have a unique opportunity to strengthen the Union and consider ambitious proposals aimed at our energy independence,” said Deputy Minister Serafin. “A plan to bolster our bargaining position should be included in the proposals,” he added.

The ministers for European affairs also addressed the subject of migration, free movement of people, and the European Semester. It is a process of increased co-ordination of EU members’ economic policies. Its goal involves a more adequate inclusion of the European dimension in the planning of domestic economic strategies. The meeting also commemorated the tenth anniversary of the EU’s enlargement.
